Myths and Truths about Hypnosis
The subject is alert and aware of everything that’s happening at all times and hears everything the hypnotist says.
Myth #2 Surrender of Will or Loss of control
All hypnosis is self-hypnosis. The subject is always in control. The hypnotist guides the hypnotic state. The subject has the complete control of everything that he/she may want to reveal about himself/herself.
Myth #3 Weak mindedness
The more intelligent an individual is, the easier to hypnotize. You must be of average intelligence to be hypnotized. You must have the ability to imagine and concentrate. The very fact that a client is looking for another tool to help themselves with an issue and is willing to do the work they have to do suggests a strong mind.
Myth#4 Revelation of secrets
The individual will not spontaneously begin talking or reveal secrets they will not tell in the waking state.
Myths #5 Hypnotized individuals do odd and crazy things
Hypnosis has many benefits-self improvement, stress reduction, weight loss, pain management, overcoming fears and phobias, etc. Stage hypnosis exists for the entertainment of the audience. It has given a very wrong impression of clinical hypnosis or hypnosis in the therapeutic setting. Hypnotherapy exists for the realization of the client’s goals, to release limiting or negative habits, fear and physical discomfort.
Myth #6 Fear of being “stuck”
The subject is always in control. The subject is capable of terminating a hypnotic state any time he/she wants to. What keeps a person in hypnosis is the hypnotist’s constant dialog. If the hypnotist stops talking the client will do one of two things. 1) They will emerge from hypnosis, curious to see why the session stopped. or 2) They’ll be so relaxed they just fall off to sleep and take a nap from which they wake up naturally as if from a nap.
Myth #7 Someone can be hypnotized against their will
The subject can not be hypnotized against their will. It is a condition of rapport, trust and respect between the subject and the hypnotist. A person will not succumb to any suggestion contrary to their goals and wishes made by the hypnotist because they remain in total control.
Myth #8 Hypnosis can be addictive
The subject can resist hypnosis at any time. This technique is not habit-forming. It is highly successful and can be deeply relaxing which encourages people to do self hypnosis. It is just another tool of self help to use if and when you choose.
Myth #9 Repeated Induction Weakens the Mind
Repetitive inductions strengthen your resolve to achieve your goals, release your fears and/or discomforts.
Myth#10 Hypnosis Against the Will
Hypnosis is an interactive experience. It is a useful tool a person can choose to help with whatever issues s/he needs to address. When there is proper rapport, a person’s conscious and unconscious mind will be more open to positive suggestions for change.
Myth#11 Criminal or Anti-Social Acts
A hypnotized person maintains their usual moral values and doesn’t do anything s/he would not do when they are not hypnotized.

I received my NGH Certification Training at North Shore Hypnosis by Carol Denicker, BCH, CI at the Holbrook Wellness Center, Holbrook New York- the only NYS Licensed School of Hypnotism. I receive annual continuing education to maintain my training at a high level.
The services I render are held out to the public as non-therapeutic hypnotism, defined as the use of hypnosis to inculcate positive thinking and the capacity for self-hypnosis. I do not represent my services as any form of medical, behavioral or mental health care, and despite research to the contrary, by law I may make no health benefit claims for my services.
